Paul Graham's essays are a classic in the startup world. This infographic series has some of the most popular of Graham's essays created over several years.
We visualized them using Adioma infographic tool, icon collection, and Adobe Illustrator.
When I moved to San Francisco I was really confused about what to do with my programming career. I think Paul Graham gave some of the most level headed advice in these essays.
@sergey_shishov Well, it's hard to compare: they are very different. Paul Graham is more about the psychology and social aspects of the startups and Fred Wilson gives more financial background. But yes, I think it's worth visualizing.
Hi, we created these infographics choosing the essays that are "infograph-able", meaning they have a well-defined structure (usually, points in a list or multiple subheadings).
If we missed some essays that you think are equally visualizable, let us know.
@elena_iak that I don't know - but the essay have a lot of advice for creators in general. Not taking investor money would just mean slower growth/slower death.
@elena_iak - yes, the bootstrapped companies is a trend in Europe at the moment. It's also much easier to get funding later, once you have some traction.
@elena_iak@ovushkan It could be that Paul Graham never tried building a company without investor funding. He just writes what he knows.
For investor-free startups you can read Jason Freed from Basecamp.
@ovushkan That would be cool. No, we follow the essay structure which usually looks like headings and sub-headings or a list of things. Some essays lack this structure and flow between loosely related points and analogies. In that case, we don't visualize.
@ovushkan Good point. I actually looked at abstractive text summarization and thought about adding it is a feature to our tool, Adioma. I did some tests and found that the algorithms distort the meanings, randomly cutting important words.
Also extractive summarization (powered by neural networks) is on the way. It will probably be more intelligent shortening text. So it would be possible to run PG essays through some text analyzer/summarizer and then automatically assigns icons, based on keywords.
@ovushkan It would be also cool to run some semantic analysis on PG essays to build some sort of tree or graph where we can see how things are connected. I know some folks have done something similar before, calculating PageRank and some sort of mental test score for each of his essay.
I haven't found any good tool/framework to do that yet.
@ovushkan@mark_vital The end goal would be for the user to input a URL and Adioma outputs a ready set of infographics where each point of the essays much to an icon and inserted into several templates, that possibly match the structure of the essay. Several, because I think there is no way to detect the semantic/logical connection between points yet.
@mark_vital Like the idea - would be interesting to see the results of topic extraction and clustering - to generalize the themes and connections between essays.
