You are correct! It's a tough situation. Being able to make a product requires some great skills but at the cost of not giving any type of credit for learning any type of marketing and sales skills. Humanly speaking, I believe it would be nearly impossible to be great at both all alone. I think it's one of the reasons web designers and developers do poorly because they are competing against those who can convey a clear message, and be proactive at being seen by others in a good light. For designers and developers, it's really tough to transition to go on the other side of the spectrum within marketing, sales, and particularly social skills. Some probably just don't like to sell themselves to others as well. I am personally trying to learn from it out of necessity. But I think deep down, I am just more built to focus on working on a product, rather than getting to be in contact with people. Can't be great at both but surely can learn a few things from marketing and sales. The best scenario would be to find a charitable soul to give some of their time to teaching marketing, and sales skill without being overwhelming and too complicated to follow.
